Locarno

Picture
Tom Landa takes time out from the Paperboys to bring Locarno to the Vancouver Island MusicFest this year, featuring a unique Latin mix of Mexican, Cuban, Spanish and North American influences.
I spoke with him in February.

Cousin Harley

Picture
Whether it be hillbilly western swing, swamp surf rockabilly, classic honky tonk or unstoppable wrecking crew rock n' roll, Cousin Harley returns to this year's Vancouver Island MusicFest to deliver the goods as only they can.
I caught up with front man Paul Pigat in late March.

David Gogo

Picture
He's played with a veritable who's who of blues greats, and no wonder. This hard working, hard driving, award-winning blues guitar virtuoso has earned his place among them. And like all the blues greats, David Gogo hasn't lost sight of the music's roots and traditions.
I caught up with Gogo at his home in Nanaimo in April, to talk about his music and the pilgrimage through the birthplace of the blues which led to his 2013 album Come on Down.

Brother Sun

Picture
It's one thing to sing folk music, but quite another to embrace, honor and spread its universal messages of social responsibility, the value of simple, honest work, justice, and faith in the power of love and people.
That much is obvious in the golden harmonies and heartfelt lyrics brought to us by Greg Greenway, Pat Wictor and Joe Jencks.
Accomplished solo performers each, together they are Brother Sun, and they have a lot to say.
Their 2013 album, Some Part of the Truth, established them in the pantheon of modern day folk artists.

World Beat at Home

Picture
I wanted to learn more about the 2015 Vancouver Island MusicFest special project called World Beat at Home, so I ambushed Artistic Director/Executive Director Doug Cox and plied him with Thai food to loosen his tongue.

Amos Garrett

Picture
He's back!
The most frequent Vancouver Island MusicFest performer returns to captivate and entertain once more.
This year's visit will see Amos Garrett reunited with Geoff Muldaur and taking part in From Memphis to Monk - a tribute to Thelonious Monk, as well as other performances.
I reached him at home at the end of May. Among other things, we talked about the recently released CD Guitar Heroes, recorded live at the 2013 Vancouver Island MusicFest, featuring Garrett, James Burton, Albert Lee and David Wilcox.

Scenic Roots

Picture
Kansas sisters Erin and Amber Rogers have been playing their bluegrass/roots/mountain music for more years than you might think. They've been touring their fiddle, dulcimer, claw-hammer banjo sounds since 2010 but they'll be coming to the Vancouver Island MusicFest for the first time with no less than eight albums under their belts. I caught up with Amber in early June to talk about their scenic journey through roots music.

Ralph Shaw

Picture
The ukulele might be an instrument that don't get no respect, but you won't get that impression from Ralph Shaw, also know as the King of the Ukulele. From old classics to risque originals, from love to laughter, Shaw has played them all.
Put another way, you could say Physic's loss was the ukulele's gain.
You'll have to listen to figure that one out.
I talked to Shaw in late May after his return from an Australian tour.
